Do you still have old T-shirts at home that you no longer wear? Pimp them up quite simply by printing T-shirts yourself. One technique often used to print T-shirts yourself is linoleum printing. Here, the desired motif is carved mirror-inverted into a so-called printing plate. The textile ink is then applied directly to the plate and thus printed on the textile. After use, the printing plate is cleaned under water and can thus be used again and again. In our VBS online store, we offer practical sets that contain all the materials you need to print old and new T-shirts yourself. You can also find many ideas and step-by-step instructions on how to print T-shirts yourself in our Ideas & Instructions section.
A simple way to print T-shirts yourself is to stamp them. To do this, use special stamp pads that contain textile ink. You can use any stamps and thus redesign your chosen piece of fabric in no time. You can still paint the motifs afterwards with fabric paint pens or with textile paint.
Painting textiles
Painting textiles is great fun for young and old. The selected textiles can be painted with colorful textile paints according to your mood. You love the watercolor effect? You can also easily apply this to your textiles. Use the special watercolor paint for textiles. Your fabric part is first slightly moistened with a sponge, the paint is applied with a wet brush. The wetter the brush and fabric, the more the paint will flow.
Batiks
One of the most famous and also popular techniques to design his textiles is batik. The technique has been around for many years and originated in Indonesia. At that time, the places that should not receive colors were marked with wax. Nowadays, these effects are achieved by knotting, wrapping or tying. T-shirts, dresses, but also bags, scarves or accessories get a whole new and fresh look in no time.
How does batik work?
For batik, you first need a piece of textile. It is best to use fabrics such as cotton, linen or other natural materials. Now tie or knot your chosen piece of fabric in the desired places with a string or similar. The areas that are now covered will remain lighter or even completely white later. The tighter the ribbon or knot, the greater the color difference will be.
Take special batik paint, which you put in a suitable container with water. Stir the batik paint according to package instructions. Now place the piece of fabric in the water bath for about 1 hour. Then place the fabric piece in a fixing bath if necessary. Rinse off any excess dye under warm water. Rinse until the water remains completely clear. Now the knots or strings can be untied. Rinse the fabric again.
